France also blasted two pig-tailed macaque monkeys to suborbital space in 1967. (Laika died during the flight.)ĭespite its canine focus, the Soviet Union and its successor state Russia did launch a number of rhesus monkeys to space in the 1980s and 1990s, as part of a program called Bion. The nation famously succeeded in lofting the first animal - a dog called Laika ("Barker") - to orbit aboard the Sputnik 2 spacecraft in November 1957. The Soviets launched their first dogs to space in 1951. The United States' space race rival, the Soviet Union, primarily used dogs in the run-up to its first human launches, thinking that canines would prove to be less fidgety in flight than monkeys. continued to launch animals for scientific experiments but increasingly concentrated on smaller creatures such as mice and insects, which are easier to care for and take up much less space (although two squirrel monkeys did ride on the space shuttle Challenger's STS-51-B mission in April-May 1985.) was slightly late to the party: Gagarin orbited our planet on his flight of April 12, 1961.)Īfter it became established that humans could indeed survive the rigors of spaceflight, monkeys and apes faded into the background. 29, 1961, paving the way for John Glenn's historic orbital flight of Feb. (Sadly, Able died several days later during an operation to remove an electrode from under her skin.)Īs the American human spaceflight program began to build momentum, the nation started experimenting with chimpanzees, which are larger and more closely related to humans than are rhesus, squirrel or other monkeys. A rhesus monkey named Able and a squirrel monkey named Baker reached an altitude of 300 miles (483 km) aboard a Jupiter rocket and were retrieved unharmed. The United States recorded a milestone in May 1959, finally recovering two primates alive after a spaceflight. Yorick died several hours after landing, possibly from heat stress suffered as he sat inside his cramped capsule in the New Mexico sun, waiting for the recovery crew. Albert VI, also known as Yorick, survived his 1951 flight, though it topped out at an altitude of just 45 miles (72 km) - significantly below the generally accepted 62-mile (100 km) boundary demarcating outer space. He survived the launch but died after a parachute failure caused his capsule to slam hard into the ground.Īlberts III and IV died during their missions in late 1949, and Albert V was victimized by another parachute failure in 1951. His reaction times were only slightly slower in space than they had been on Earth.Another rhesus monkey named Albert II, for example, became the first primate to reach space, achieving an altitude of 83 miles (134 km) aboard another V2 in June 1949. And Ham performed quite well, even in zero-gravity. If he made it in time, he received a banana-flavored pellet, which, though clichéd, is an inevitable dietary preference of chimps. If Ham did not pull the lever within five seconds of the light flashing, he received an electric shock on the soles of his feet. Ham, whose vitals were closely monitored by NASA techs on the ground, went 157 miles into the sky with a simple mission: to tug on levers when corresponding lights flashed. There was work to be done - specifically, to see if chimps, and by close genetic association, humans, had slower reaction times in space. Earrings worn by the affluent in early Roman civilizations were set with precious stones such as diamonds and pearls, and a clean-looking pop of pearl on the front of the lobe is as timeless as ever. The highest-quality emeralds are green or bluish-green. Emerald earrings are highly prized today, and their quality lies in their rich, saturated color. Women wore ornamental earrings - studs and hoops at the very least - in Ancient Egypt, which is home to mines that are among the earliest sources of emeralds in the world. In fact, wearing earrings actually goes back thousands of years, and you can find many tangible connections between now and then in how we continue to talk about these treasured accessories. The charges against Baldwin were dropped in April, but prosecutors added an evidence-tampering charge against Gutierrez-Reed two months later, saying she “did transfer narcotics to another person with the intent to prevent the apprehension, prosecution or conviction of herself.” Gutierrez-Reed and Rust producer-star Alec Baldwin - who was pointing a gun when it discharged, killing Hutchins and wounding director Joel Souza - were charged in late January with two counts of second-degree involuntary manslaughter. She told attorneys on both sides to “stay the course” on the charges. “For you to say you’ve basically tainted a jury - we’re not even there yet.” “This is at the preliminary stage,” Marlowe Sommer said. New Mexico District Court Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer, however, said the defense did not show “actual and substantial prejudice” to warrant dismissal of the charges against the armorer. The lawyers argued that those comments could taint potential jurors in the case. In a virtual hearing, defense attorneys claimed that there were structural and jurisdictional problems with the state’s comments about Gutierrez-Reed allegedly trying to hide cocaine from investigators and likely being “hung over” on the day of the on-set shooting that killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins in October 2021. PREVIOUSLY, August 1: A Santa Fe judge today denied Rust armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed’s request to have the charges against her dismissed over prosecutors’ recent statements to the media. The armorer is looking at up to three years behind bars if she is found guilty. Now the lone defendant after Baldwin was dropped from the matter months ago by newly installed special prosecutors, Gutierrez-Reed is facing involuntary manslaughter and tampering with evidence charges. “After reading and understanding the above, I hereby give up my right to personally appear before the District Court for arraignment and I hereby enter a plea of not guilty to all criminal offenses charged in the above styled cause,” said the crew member in a waiver of arraignment and plea filing on August 7. Hutchins was shot dead in October 2021 by a gun in Alec Baldwin’s hand, Rust director Joel Souza was also injured. With Rust armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed entering a plea this week, the trial before state District Court Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer will see jury selection start on December 5. UPDATE, 3:56 PM: Almost two years since Rust cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was killed on the New Mexico asset of the indie Western, the trial over her death has been given a start date. You must make a Qtr selection in order to use the QtrQtr box. The Qtr selection box divides the section into quarters and the QtrQtr selection box gives you a quarter of the quarter section specified in the Qtr box or, in other words, one-sixteenth of the entire section. These drop down boxes are used in conjunction with the Twn/Rng/Sec box to further divide the section into smaller pieces. You could put the same six digits in the parcel number field and click the parcel search button to get the same results. Township/Range/Section is simply the first 6 digits of a parcel number using 2 digits for each. You may further refine your search by using the Qtr/QtrQtr drop down boxes in conunction with the Twn/Rng/Sec box to divide the section into smaller pieces. Enter a number in this field and press the legal search button to retrieve a list of parcels in a particular Township/Range/Section. The last 4 characters are only used if the parcel needs further description. The next 6 digits are x-y map coordinates with 3 digits each. The first 6 digits describe the township/range/section for the parcel using 2 digits for each. The parcel number is a 16 digit number in 6-6-4 format. You may page through all parcels selected. A limited number of parcels are listed in parcel number order. If the number you are entering has all zeros on the end of it, you only need to key the number in up to the last non-zero digit. You will receive a list of parcels starting at the parcel number you entered. Like you I found them confusing and unintuitive at first but once I learned what they were and got used to them they became more meaningful than page numbers.Īs I recall a location is 128 character spaces in the book, including invisible characters for formatting. I think it's worth getting used to using locations and percentages as they're really a lot more relevant in ebooks. Do the new Nooks allow that? At any rate, if anyone can enlighten me on the Nook & Kobo page numbering issue, that would be swell. I also just saw an article on a google search from 2013 where you could download apps for Kindle and Playstore on the Nook, but then saw something that contradicts that. Amazon say it's up to the publisher whether to include page numbers or not, but how did Sony figure out how to include page numbers on all books all those years ago and the developers at Amazon still haven't? So.my question is, do Nook or Kobo behave like the Kindle (some books have page numbers, some don't) or like the Sony? I haven't been on the forum for a while and just read about the Nook Glow 3 which definitely has me intrigued (Night Mode very appealing). Kindle does give you page numbers for mainstream books, but several of the last ones I've purchased have been without. Location 627 or 19% doesn't really cut it for me. I really don't like reading without some idea where I am in a book. The Sony Reader gave you page numbers for every single book, small press or not, converted or not. I thought it would be nice to not be converting and side-loading everything for a change, and the Kindle does have some features I thought I would enjoy and I do. I bought a Kindle as my reading habits run more to the niche market that Amazon caters to and Kobo does not. A few months back I bought my first Kindle, the basic version, and am somewhat disappointed. I started e-reading with the Sony PRS-350 Reader Pocket Edition (5" screen) which served me well for many years. The reverse of that happened in a bedroom. Having learned from that experience, I did the same thing in the bathrooms and then the bedroom. Guess what happened to all the stuff still in that other office. One day I realized I hadn't brought back anything for a year. I was too busy to bring the items back in all at once, so I gradually brought back things as I used them. Everything was stored in a neighboring empty office. I adopted this strategy after my office was recarpeted. If I progressively put second- and third-level priority items further from the area of use, eventually, I get to items that I have to ask myself why I have them, and they go. The exception is with items I need when in pain, which doesn't happen often but I give them high priority space, because I don't function well in pain, and can't find them if they aren't in a high-priority space. As for the latter, my go-to starting point is to identify the things I use every day and give them top priority within arms reach of where I use them. Then I go see what is in that space that maybe I am not using anymore or that would be better stored somewhere else. If I see something sitting out, I ask where I would put it if the house was empty. I figure that clutter means I have stuff I am not using. But every room is better without clutter. And you are right in that people don't tend to think bedrooms need to be organized. This is all excellent advice! I am saving this article and will read it many times. If they already have an overabundance of toys and clothes, perhaps select one or two special things and donate the rest. Sometimes drawers and closets become overcrowded with too much stuff, making it difficult for the child to find things and put them away.Ĭonsider being selective about the items you introduce into your child’s bedroom. In my experience with clients, this can be both a blessing and a curse. Perhaps your child receives hand-me-downs from older cousins or friends. If you have clothes, toys or books you’d like to save for a younger sibling, I recommend removing them from prime storage areas and placing them in a container to store at the top of a closet or another out-of-the-way storage area. A few favorite school and art projects were saved in a memorabilia box. We donated clothes that were too small and toys and books that were no longer being used. When my children were small, we spent time at the end of each school year sorting clothes, books, toys and schoolwork. I suggest paring down the items in your child’s bedroom a few times a year. |
